Sound first

You never see a chart in a lesson. Each character is introduced as a rhythm at 15–20 WPM so your brain stores it as a sound, not a picture to decode.

Koch method

Start with two characters. Add one more only when you hit 90% accuracy. Forty characters later you can copy real traffic — without ever plateauing.

Farnsworth timing

Why charts fail

The classic way to learn Morse is a printed table of dots and dashes. It works until about 10 words per minute, and then it stops working completely. The reason is that chart-learners decode in two steps: hear the signal, count the elements, look the pattern up, then produce the letter. Above 10 WPM there is no time for the lookup, so learners hit a wall and most give up. Everyone who has studied Morse pedagogy — from Ludwig Koch in the 1930s to modern ham-radio trainers — agrees on the fix: learn characters as sounds at the speed you eventually want to copy.

The Koch method

Koch, a German psychologist, showed that students who learned at full character speed from the first lesson, adding one character at a time, reached 12 WPM in roughly half the time of conventional classes. Farnsworth spacing

Full-speed characters are easy to recognise but hard to keep up with at first. Farnsworth timing keeps each letter at 18 WPM and stretches the silence between letters and words — starting around 5–8 WPM effective speed — then gradually closes the gap. Spaced repetition and confusion pairs

Rather than re-drilling everything, DotDash keeps a lightweight memory model per character and schedules reviews close to the point of forgetting — the same principle behind flashcard systems like SM-2. It also tracks which characters you confuse with each other (U/V, B/D, S/H are classic pairs) and builds targeted drills for them.

Why the game layer isn’t fluff

The single best predictor of success in Morse is daily practice, and the single biggest reason people fail is stopping after week two. Streaks, hearts and small XP rewards exist to make the daily five minutes feel automatic. Every mechanic is there to get you back into a lesson tomorrow, not to sell you anything — which is why DotDash has no ads on any tier.
