The Koch Method: Why Learning Morse Fast Works Better

How a 1930s German psychologist discovered that learning Morse at full speed from day one beats memorising a chart, and how to use his method yourself.

Ask a roomful of radio operators how they learned Morse code and you will hear two kinds of story. One group memorised a chart, practised slowly, got stuck somewhere around eight words per minute, and spent months clawing their way past it. The other group learned with the Koch method, never went slowly at all, and do not quite understand what the fuss is about. This article explains what Ludwig Koch discovered in the 1930s, why it works, and how to apply it.

Who was Ludwig Koch?

Ludwig Koch was a German psychologist who, in the mid-1930s, was asked to study how telegraph operators could be trained more efficiently. The prevailing approach was the obvious one: learn the whole alphabet, then start slow and gradually speed up. Koch noticed that trainees using this approach almost always stalled at around ten words per minute, and he set out to find out why.

His conclusion was that slow Morse and fast Morse are, to the brain, two different skills. At slow speeds a learner has time to count dots and dashes and consciously look up the answer. At higher speeds there is no time for that, and the learner must recognise the overall sound of each character as a single unit. Students who practised slowly became excellent at counting, a skill that then had to be abandoned and replaced. The plateau was the cost of that replacement.

Koch’s experiment turned the process around. His students heard every character at a full operating speed, around 12 WPM in his trials, from the first minute of instruction. They started with just two characters and added one at a time. His reported results were striking: a group of trainees reached 12 WPM on the complete alphabet in about 13.5 hours of instruction, a fraction of the time typical for conventional methods.

How the Koch method works

The method is simple enough to describe in a few sentences, which is part of its appeal:

  1. Choose a character speed of at least 15 WPM (many modern courses use 18 or 20). You will never go slower than this.
  2. Start with two characters only. Listen to random strings of those two and write down what you hear.
  3. When you can copy them with 90 percent accuracy, add a third character and repeat.
  4. Continue adding characters one at a time until you have the full set.

Because you only ever hear characters at real speed, there is nothing to unlearn. And because you only ever face a small set at once, the task stays manageable: distinguishing K from M is easy; it is only overwhelming when all 26 letters arrive at once.

Why 90 percent?

The 90 percent threshold is about stability rather than perfection. Below it, the new character is still competing for attention with the old ones, and adding more will cause everything to collapse. Above it, the character has become automatic enough to sit in the background while you focus on the next. Waiting for 100 percent, on the other hand, wastes time, since occasional slips are normal even for experts.

Why not alphabetical order?

Koch-style courses introduce characters in an order that keeps similar sounds apart and gives you useful, distinct letters early. A common modern sequence begins K, M, R, S, U, A, P, T, L, O, W, I, and so on. K (dah-di-dah) and M (dah-dah) are both easy to hear and sound nothing alike. Introducing E, I, S and H together, as the alphabet would, invites confusion because they differ only in the number of dots. The exact order varies between courses; what matters is that it is designed around sound.

The last row is important. Koch’s method is uncomfortable in the first few sessions because the characters arrive fast and you cannot cheat by counting. Learners who persist through the first week typically report that the discomfort fades and the letters simply start to appear in their heads. With chart memorisation the curve is reversed: early progress is flattering, and the pain comes later when you try to speed up.

The role of Farnsworth timing

Koch solved the problem of character speed but not the problem of thinking time. If characters are fast and the gaps between them are also fast, a beginner gets no breathing room. The standard fix, developed later, is Farnsworth timing: keep each character at 18 or 20 WPM but stretch the silences between letters and words so the overall rate is perhaps 8 to 10 WPM. You recognise each letter as a fast sound but have time to write it down before the next one arrives. As you improve, the gaps shrink. Almost every modern Koch course, from the ARRL’s practice files to smartphone apps, combines the two.

Applying the method on your own

You can follow Koch’s approach with nothing more than a source of random characters at a fixed speed. A few practical tips from people who have done it:

  • Write what you hear immediately. Do not wait for the next character in the hope of working out the previous one; that is counting in disguise.
  • If you miss a character, let it go and catch the next one. Chasing a missed letter causes you to miss three more.
  • Keep sessions to 10 to 15 minutes. Koch’s trainees worked in short blocks, and fatigue quickly pushes accuracy below the 90 percent line.
  • Measure accuracy honestly. If you are at 80 percent, stay where you are. The method only works if you respect the threshold.
  • Mix in real words as soon as your character set allows it. Random groups are for measurement; words are for motivation.

Does it really work?

Koch’s original figures have been repeated for ninety years and are hard to verify independently, but the method’s core claims match what modern learning science would predict. Practising the target skill at target conditions, rather than an easier proxy, is a well-established principle. Breaking a large task into small increments that each reach mastery before the next is another. And the plateau Koch described is reported so consistently by self-taught operators that its existence is not seriously disputed.
