Farnsworth Timing: The Secret to Learning Morse Without the 10 WPM Plateau

What Farnsworth timing is, how it differs from simply slowing Morse down, and why it is the key to going from beginner to 20 WPM without relearning anything.

If you have ever looked at Morse practice software, you have probably seen two speed settings where you expected one: “character speed” and “effective speed”, or “WPM” and “Farnsworth WPM”. That second number is the single most useful idea in Morse instruction, and understanding it will save you months. This article explains what Farnsworth timing is, where it came from, and how to use it to avoid the plateau that traps so many self-taught learners.

The problem Farnsworth solves

Learning Morse by ear works best when characters are played fast enough that you cannot count their elements. Around 15 WPM and above, a letter is a single blur of sound and your brain has no choice but to recognise it as a whole. That is what the Koch method is built on. But fast characters with fast gaps give a beginner no time to react: the next letter has arrived before you have written down the last one. Slowing everything down fixes the reaction time but reintroduces the counting problem, and the letters start to sound different. A 5 WPM “A” is a long beep, a pause, and a much longer beep; a 20 WPM “A” is a quick “di-dah”. They are, to the ear, different sounds.

Farnsworth timing splits the difference. It keeps each character at full speed and stretches only the silence between characters and words.

Where the name comes from

The technique is named after Donald R. “Russ” Farnsworth, an American radio amateur with the callsign W6TTB, who promoted it through a series of Morse training recordings in the late 1950s. He was not the first person to stretch the spaces between characters; instructors had done it informally for years, and Koch’s own work assumed realistic character speed. But Farnsworth’s recordings made the approach widely available, and his name stuck. The American Radio Relay League later adopted Farnsworth spacing for its code practice broadcasts and for licence examinations, typically sending characters at 18 WPM while the overall rate was set to 5, 7.5 or 13 WPM.

How the maths works

Standard Morse timing is measured in units equal to the length of one dot. A dash is three units, the gap between elements inside a character is one unit, the gap between letters is three units, and the gap between words is seven units. At a given speed, every one of those is derived from the dot length. Using the standard reference word PARIS (50 units including the trailing word gap), a dot at 20 WPM lasts 60 milliseconds.

Farnsworth timing uses two speeds. The character speed sets the dot length and therefore the dashes and the gaps inside each letter. The effective or overall speed sets how long the whole message takes. The difference is made up entirely by lengthening the gaps between letters and between words, keeping their 3:7 ratio. An 18 WPM character speed with a 10 WPM effective speed, for example, sounds like crisp, fast letters separated by relaxed pauses. The ARRL published a formula for these gap lengths in 1990 so that software and recordings could agree on exactly what “18/10” means.

Why this avoids the plateau

The infamous 10 WPM plateau is what happens when someone who learned slow Morse tries to speed up. Every letter they know is stored as a slow sound with a countable shape. As the characters compress, those stored sounds stop matching, and the learner has to relearn the entire alphabet as fast sounds while also trying to keep up. It is demoralising, and many people quit there.

With Farnsworth timing there is nothing to relearn. The letters you heard in your first lesson at 18 WPM character speed are exactly the letters you will hear at 18 WPM effective speed. The only thing that changes as you progress is the length of the silences, and shrinking a silence requires no new knowledge, only faster reaction. Progress becomes a smooth slope instead of a wall.

Choosing your settings

If you are configuring practice software yourself, the following guidelines are widely used:

  • Character speed: never below 15 WPM. Most instructors recommend 18 to 20. Some go as high as 25 on the theory that it forces pure sound recognition.
  • Starting effective speed: whatever lets you hit about 90 percent accuracy on your current character set. For a complete beginner that is usually 5 to 8 WPM.
  • Increase the effective speed by 1 or 2 WPM each time you comfortably exceed 90 percent. Do not jump.
  • Once the effective speed matches the character speed, you are copying standard Morse. To go faster, raise both numbers together.

Farnsworth versus Wordsworth

A related variant, sometimes called Wordsworth timing, stretches only the gaps between words while keeping letters at standard spacing. It is useful once you can recognise individual letters comfortably but still need time to assemble them into words. Some learners move from Farnsworth to Wordsworth to standard timing; others simply close the Farnsworth gaps gradually. Both paths work, and neither involves ever slowing the characters down.

Common questions

Won’t I get used to the long gaps?

Only if you never shorten them. The gaps are training wheels, and like training wheels they should come off gradually. As long as you raise the effective speed whenever your accuracy allows, you will not become dependent on the pauses.

Does Farnsworth apply to sending?

Yes, and it is a good habit. When you start sending, form each character at your natural fast rhythm and leave generous gaps rather than dragging out the dots and dashes. Receiving operators find slow characters with long dashes far harder to copy than quick characters with extra space. Clean character shape with relaxed spacing is the mark of a good beginner fist.

What speed is “fluent”?

Conversational Morse on the amateur bands typically runs between 15 and 25 WPM. At 20 WPM with standard timing you can follow most on-air conversations. Contest operators and enthusiasts regularly copy 30 to 40 WPM, and the record for receiving is over 75 WPM. For most learners, 20 WPM standard timing is the milestone that marks genuine fluency, and Farnsworth timing is the most reliable way to get there.
